Iguanas mate once a year with each female laying up to 75 eggs in burrows they dig almost anywhere causing untold damage. But did you know that that the female Iguanas can store semen for up to 3 years, meaning that the females only need to mate once every 3 years.
Iguanas are an invasive species and have no real predators, especially once they get past a couple months old. But did you know that Iguanas have a 3rd eye on the top of their head? It's known as the parietal eye. It allows them to detect any predators that may be above them, like birds. This is especially useful when they are babies. If they do detect a predator above, the male babies with cover the females with their bodies. Sacrificing themselves for the survival of the females! Assuring that their species will survive.
It will be necessary to continually use IggyTrap until the beading population of the Iguanas has been substantially reduced and even then, it may still require extended use bases on what the surrounding areas are doing.
Well, the short answer is climate change. Iguanas cannot tolerate extreme cold (temperatures below 36 degrees and thus die). Up until 2010 Florida would experience a freeze at least once every 2-3 years extending down to the beginning of the Keys. These cold snaps would help keep the population in check. South Florida hasn't had a solid cold snap since 2010 which has allowed the Iguana Population to literally explode. A female laying 75 eggs every year without any real predators for the last 13 years has allowed them to exponentially increase their population.
