Iguanas in Florida are invasive reptiles causing significant ecological and infrastructural issues in Monroe County, Florida. Originally from Central and South America, these iguanas have well established populations throughout South Florida, including the Keys. What makes the Keys so special is it is the perfect habitat for the Iguanas. Allowing them to proliferate in unprecedented numbers. Their presence poses several challenges:

Ecological Impact: Green iguanas feed on native vegetation, such as the endangered tree snail and plants vital to species like the Miami blue butterfly. This feeding behavior threatens native plant and animal populations. 

Structural Damage: Iguanas dig burrows that can destabilize infrastructure, including canal banks, seawalls, and building foundations. In Key West, their burrowing has even affected the historic city cemetery. 

Human Interaction: While generally not aggressive, large iguanas can defend themselves if threatened, potentially causing injury. They are also known to carry salmonella bacteria, posing health risks to humans.
